Mrs. Fannie Elizabeth Nafziger Urish, age 92, of Mt. Sterling, Illinois passed away at 12:45 a.m. Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at Heritage Health, Therapy and Senior Care in Mt. Sterling.

Fannie was born August 18, 1923 near Hopedale, Illinois the daughter of Daniel Benjamin and Eva Sutter Nafziger.   Fannie attended Hopedale schools and graduated from Hopedale High School.   She married Edgar Urish on May 29, 1943 in Barstow, California and he survives.

Survivors also include five children Dana Briggs of Mt. Sterling, Paul (Gail) of Lorette, Manitaba, Joe of St. Louis, Joan (Rick) Dombrowski of Plainfield and Jeff (Jennifer) of Creve Coeur, Missouri.  Six grandchildren Tina Tatum, Thomas Urish, Rina Urish, Anna Poore, Emily Dombrowski and Adam Urish.  Three great grandchildren Diamante, Kenny and Troy Lee Tatum.  Also surviving are two brothers Don Nafziger of Tremont, Illinois and Tim Nafziger of Glen Ellyn, Illinois and two sisters Irene Frakes of Aledo, Texas and Ruth Nafziger of Hesston, Kansas. 

Fannie was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sisters Vietta Hefner and Mary Livesay, 2 brothers Delmar and Herb Nafziger and a grandson Troy Lee Briggs.

Fannie and Edgar moved to rural Brown County in 1952.  Fannie was an active farm wife, milking cows, driving tractors and helping with the chores.  She also worked a number of off farm jobs during her lifetime.  She was the custodian of South Grade School from 1980 – 1989.  Fannie really enjoyed the interaction with the kids and the teachers.

Fannie’s greatest joy however came from caring for her family.  Fannie was a constant source and example of inner strength, encouragement and inspiration for her children and her husband.  Fannie was an excellent cook and everyone loved a meal at her house, Fannie also enjoyed gardening, quilting and reading in her spare time.

Fannie was a member of the Mennonite Church of Hopedale, Illinois and faithfully attended the First Baptist Church in Mt. Sterling.  She was a member of the Women’s Missionary Society of the First Baptist Church and the Siloam Springs and Brown County Home Bureau.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 9, 2016 at the First Baptist Church in Mt. Sterling with Rev. Aaron Foster officiating.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 9, 2016 in the Green Valley Cemetery in Green Valley, Illinois. 

In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church of Mt. Sterling or the Brown County Public Library.
