James Russell “Jim” Newell, age 68, of Mt. Sterling, Illinois passed away at 8:12 p.m. Thursday, April 6, 2017 at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville, Illinois.

He was born December 16, 1948 in Beardstown, Illinois the son of William Russell and Elizabeth B. Simmons Newell.  He married Barbara Reische at the Hersman Presbyterian Church and to this union 3 children Roger, Carolyn and Aaron were born.

Jim worked for Dixon Auto Body in Mt. Sterling for over 30 years and had earlier worked for Oscar Mayer in Beardstown for several years.

He graduated from Brown County High School with the class of 1967 and was of the Christian faith.

Jim was a motorcycle enthusiast who always loved riding his Harley.  He also enjoyed fishing and finding a good bargain.

Survivors include 3 children Roger Newell (Tonya) of Hersman, Carolyn Kerker (Dan) of Mt. Sterling and Aaron Newell (Lisa) of Camp Point.  3 brothers David L. Newell (Linda) of Versailles, Wayne E. Newell of Quincy and Ronald W. Newell (Patti) of Atlanta, Georgia.  3 sisters Janet A. Farmer of Florida, Pauline J. Granger (Mike) of Cummings, Georgia and Connie S. Dixon (Kevin) of Mt. Sterling.  7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren also survive along with several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 10, 2017 in the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling with Rev. Aaron Foster officiating.

Burial will be in the Versailles West Side Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.  Friends may also call from 8:00 a.m. until the time of services on Monday at the funeral home.  

Memorials are suggested to the Great River Honor Flight or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
