Carol Susan Howe, age 74, of Quincy, Illinois passed away at 5:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois.

She was born April 30, 1942 in Mt. Sterling, Illinois the daughter of Frederick and Anna Koch Elbus.  She married James William Calvo on August 4, 1962 and he preceded her in death on August 1, 1983.  She later married Harold Wayne Howe on February 23, 1986 and he survives.

Mrs. Howe worked in the office at Prairie Farms Dairy in Quincy for over 20 years.

She attended St. Mary’s Academy in Mt. Sterling. Earlier in life, Susan was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mt. Sterling and was more recently a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Quincy, where she enjoyed singing in the church choir.  She was also a member of Cedar Crest Country Club in Quincy.

Susan was known as a very social person who truly loved spending time with her family and many friends. She always enjoyed playing bridge and golfing, but her greatest joy was attending her grandchildren’s many activities.

Survivors include 4 children Ann Smola (Mike) of Rolling Meadows, Illinois, Teresa Moffitt of Hannibal, Missouri, Jim Calvo of Naperville, Illinois and Kristy McCarter (Jeff) of Hinsdale, Illinois. 13 grandchildren Samantha and Lukas Smola, Melissa Bolger (Bryan), Lauren and James Moffitt, Jimmy, Matt, Charlie and Joey Calvo and Jack, Will, Max and Ella McCarter.  3 step children Dawn Barrel of Detroit, Michigan, Jill Havermale (Dan) of Quincy and Hope Owens (Ryan) of Lewistown, Missouri.  6 step grandchildren Lexie Howe, Aden and Ashton Barrel, Spencer and Ashley Havermale, and Jackson Owens. 3 brothers-in-law Rob Calvo (Kim) of Sugarland, Texas, Richard Fogle of Leander, Texas and Jack Link of Springfield, Illinois.  6 sisters-in-law Norma Elbus of Quincy, Phyllis Vanzant of Mt. Sterling, Barb McGartland (Mac) of Camp Point, Vicki Hagen of Quincy, Joyce Nelson of Jacksonville and Angie Queenen (Kevin) of Pleasanton, California also survive along with several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers Fred J. and John Elbus and 4 sisters Maxine Smith, Marietta Howell, Joan Fogle and Pat Link. 

A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 25, 2016 in the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mt. Sterling with Father Thomas Henseler officiating.

Burial will be in the Mt. Sterling Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling.  A prayer service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.
