Cletus Victor “Vic” Kassing, age 83, of Mt. Sterling, Illinois passed away at 8:40 p.m. Thursday, January 12, 2017 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois.

He was born August 26, 1933 in Mt. Sterling, Illinois the son of Cletus E. and Cecilia Rita Langan Kassing.  He married Mary Bernadine Yakle on May 28, 1955 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mt. Sterling and she survives.

Vic graduated from St. Mary’s Academy with the class of 1951 and then started in the lumber business working for O. J. Bump in Mt. Sterling.  From 1953 until 1955  Vic served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War.  Upon returning to Mt. Sterling he returned to the lumber yard and was proud to have been able to purchase the lumber business from Mr. Bump and establish Kassing Lumber Company in 1972, which is still owned and operated by his family today.

Mr. Kassing was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Mt. Sterling, the nocturnal adoration society, he was a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus and was a past 4th degree member.

Vic was a devoted member of the Mt. Sterling American Legion Post #374 having served in numerous capacities including commander, treasurer, adjutant and was instrumental in the installation of the Veterans Monument in Mt. Sterling.  He truly loved his community and was always willing to help wherever needed, whether that was coaching little league, serving as a cub or boy scout leader, or simply cheering for the hometown hornets.  The community recognized this service by recently establishing the Vic and Mary Kassing park in Mt. Sterling.  He had a true love of hunting and enjoying passing on this love to his grandchildren by teaching them the proper way to hunt.  He was a harness racing fan who always enjoyed attending the many county and state fairs to watch the horses race.  Vic also enjoyed watching his grandchildren compete at every level and hated missing any of their games.  He was especially happy he was able to watch his great granddaughter, Brooklyn, win a basketball state championship in December of 2016.

Survivors include his wife Mary Kassing of Mt. Sterling.  4 children Ron Kassing (Leann), Jeff Kassing (Sharon), Chris Kassing (Janis) and Teresa Logsdon all of Mt. Sterling.  12 grandchildren Sommer Stiefel (Clinton) of Ursa, Illinois, Evan Kassing (Sarah) of Lake St. Louis, Missouri, Georgia Simpson (Drew) of Chillicothe, Illinois, Sophia Taylor (Matt) of Fenton, Missouri, Leah Zeitler (Jordan) of Bartonville, Illinois, Samantha Evans (Adam) of Mt. Sterling, Hunter Garbett (fiancé, Katie DeWitt) of Mt. Sterling, Addison Trimpe (Tony) of Canton, Illinois, Nathan Kassing (Companion, Mackenzie Stock), Ellie Kassing, Hudson Garbett and Kruse Logsdon all of Mt. Sterling.  7 great grandchildren Brooklyn and Nolan Stiefel of Ursa, Emma, Cora, Anna and Caleb Kassing all of Lake St. Louis, Missouri and Henry Evans of Mt. Sterling also survive along with several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 son Allen Kassing, 1 daughter Joyce Kassing and 1 brother Donald Kassing.

Funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 17, 2017 in the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mt. Sterling with Father Steve Thompson officiating.

Burial will be in the Mt. Sterling Catholic Cemetery.  A military service will be conducted at the graveside by the Mt. Sterling American Legion Post #374.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday evening at the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling.  A rosary service and nocturnal adoration prayers will be conducted at the conclusion of the visitation.   Friends may also call from 8:00 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
