December 25, 1932 ~ May 7, 2016 (age 83) 83 Years OldWayne Lyle Shepard, age 83, of Mt. Sterling, Illinois passed away at 5:13 a.m. Saturday, May 7, 2016 at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy, Illinois.
He was born December 25, 1932 in Brown County, Illinois the son of Frederick William and Stella Taylor Shepard. He married Carol Logsdon Clark on February 24, 1989 in Las Vegas, Nevada and she survives.
Wayne owned and operated the Pub Café in Mt. Sterling for over 5 years and had also owned and operated Shep’s Variety Store in Mt. Sterling. He had worked for Brown County Motors in Mt. Sterling and Alters in Beardstown for several years. Earlier in life he worked for Quincy Trading Post.
Wayne attended Brown County Schools and graduated from Brown County High School with the class of 1951.
Mr. Shepard was a veteran of the Korean War having served his country in the United States Army.
Wayne was a member and past commander of the Mt. Sterling American Legion Post #374. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan and was a little league coach for many years.
Survivors include his wife Carol Shepard of Mt. Sterling. 4 children Jackie Drebes (Wayne) of Fowler, Illinois, Lori Tucker of Mt. Sterling, John Shepard of Mendon, Illinois and Tracey Reel (Rick) of Pittsfield, Illinois. 2 step children Sherry Vermillion (Daryl) of Beardstown and Von Clark (Beth) of Timewell. 1 sister Barbara Joan Hall (Melvin) of Tuscombia, Missouri. 11 grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren and several great grandchildren also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 son Fred Shepard, 1 granddaughter Sara Tucker, 1 grandson in infancy, 2 brothers Don and Ivan Shepard and 4 sisters Marie Sprinkle, Nellie Pate, Dorothy Smith and Jane Langan.
Per Wayne’s request, cremation will be accorded and a graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2016 in the Mt. Sterling City Cemetery.
A memorial visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. on Saturday at the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling.
Memorials are suggested to the Mt. Sterling American Legion Post #374 and be left at the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling.
