Barbara Jackson Clayes

Barbara Allen Smith Jackson Clayes, age 78, of Kewanee, Illinois and formerly of Versailles, Illinois passed away at 10:30 p.m. Sunday, July 23, 2017 at her residence in Kewanee.

She was born April 23, 1939 in Versailles, Illinois the daughter of William F. and Lottie Luella Surratt Smith.  She married Franklin Wayne Jackson on June 8, 1953 in Virginia, Illinois and he preceded her in death on October 12, 1996.  She later married Frank Clayes, Jr. on October 25, 1998 in Kewanee, Illinois and he survives.

Mrs. Clayes worked for Andris Waunee Farm Restaurant in Kewanee for over 23 years.  Barbara then worked for several years for the Kewanee YMCA.    She attended Versailles and Mt. Sterling schools and graduated from Brown County High School.  Barbara then graduated from Blackhawk East in Kewanee in 1993.

She was a member of the Salvation Army in Kewanee.   Barbara was known as an avid Elvis fan and she truly loved the time she spent with her family.

Survivors include her husband Frank Clayes, Jr. of Kewanee.  2 daughters Frances Petty and Ethel Murphy both of Kewanee.  1 brother Charles Dick Smith of Kewanee.  1 sister Glenna Boker of Kewanee.  8 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren also survive along with several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 1 sister Lula Swan, 1 brother James Smith, 1 half-sister Juanita Surratt, 1 stepson Frank Clayes, III, 1 granddaughter Michelle Lea Murphy, 1 grandson Brian Lee Murphy and 1 great granddaughter Summer Petty.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 27, 2017 in the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling.

Burial will be in the Hall Cemetery near Versailles, Illinois.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Thursday in the funeral home.

A memorial service will also be held at the First Baptist Church in Galva, Illinois at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 29, 2017.
