Carl Leslie Hannig, age 80, of Versailles, Illinois passed away at 4:28 p.m. Monday, April 17, 2017 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Illinois.

He was born September 4, 1936 on the family farm near Carlyle, Illinois the son of Paul Carl and Freda Scholz Hannig.  He married Charlotte Hagemann on September 17, 1966 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Staunton, Illinois and she survives.

Earlier in life Carl worked as an insurance salesman and had worked for several employers in the construction industry.  He had also served as the public works superintendent for the Village of Versailles from May, 1989 until his retirement in July of 2002.

He attended Beaver Prairie country school, Staunton Grade school and graduated from Staunton High School.

Mr. Hannig served his country in the United States Air Force from January 1957 until January 1961.

Carl was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Mt. Sterling.  He was also a member of the Versailles Fire Department for 20 years and had served as a Boy Scout Leader for several years. 

He always enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family at his river home, but his greatest joy was his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Charlotte Hannig of Versailles.  2 sons Curt Hannig (Annette) and Chad Hannig (Danielle) all of Versailles.  3 grandchildren Lane Herald and Cale and Callie Hannig also survive along with 1 sister Valentena Sherfy of Staunton, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters Evelyn Schuepbach and Vivian Brauer and 2 brothers Paulie Hannig and Jack Smoot.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, April 21, 2017 in the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling with Rev. Douglas Evanson officiating.  A military service will be conducted at the funeral home by the Mt. Sterling American Legion Post #374.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services on Friday at the funeral home.  

Following the services, per his request, cremation rites will be accorded and private burial will be held at a later date in the Versailles West Side Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Versailles Senior Center, the Mt. Sterling First Lutheran Church or the charity of the donor’s choice.
