James Flavius “Jim” Tice, age 92, of Mt. Sterling, Illinois passed away at 7:55 a.m. Thursday, December 7, 2017 at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy, Illinois.

He was born June 6, 1925 in Brown County, Illinois the son of Clarence and Calista Price Tice.  He married Maxine F. Wagner on June 30, 1945 in Quincy, Illinois and she preceded him in death June 7, 2012.

Earlier in life Jim was engaged in farming and then worked as a carpenter for Red Schnepper in Beardstown, Illinois.  He later worked in sales and kitchen design for both Jefferson County Lumber in St. Louis and Kitchenland in Edwardsville.

Jim was a veteran of World War II having served his country in the United States Army from 1945 until 1947 with the 9th Infantry Division Signal Company in Germany, as a field lineman and telephone switchboard operator.   Jim was proud to have been a recipient of the Quilt of Valor.

Mr. Tice was a member of the Mt. Sterling First Baptist Church and a member of the Mt. Sterling American Legion Post #374.  He was a former member of the Jacksonville Antique Auto Club.

Jim was always willing to lend a hand and had the ability to fix anything. He also enjoyed collecting and restoring Vespa Scooters, as well as restoring a 1931 Model A Ford which is currently on display at the Brown County Depot Museum.  Jim loved attending flea markets, participating in show and tell at McDonalds and feeding and watching the many birds in his yard, but one of his greatest joys was seeing his great grandchildren running across the yard when they would come to see him.

Survivors include 2 daughters Jennifer Suhling and Rhonda Johnson (Randy) all of Mt. Sterling.  3 granddaughters Jeri Howell (Booky) of Mt. Sterling, Melissa Walker (Fiancé, Eric Goben) of West Des Moines, Iowa and Ashley Jackson of Mt. Sterling.  6 great grandchildren Ethan and Evan Howell, Katelyn and Kale Jackson and Melayna and Hayden Walker also survive along with several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 11, 2017 in the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling with Rev. Dan Edwards officiating.

Burial will be in the Mt. Sterling City Cemetery.  A military service will be conducted at the graveside by the Illinois National Guard Funeral Honors Detail and the Mt. Sterling American Legion Post #374.
