Kathryn "Kate" Smith

Flora Kathryn “Kate” Smith, age 90, of Mt. Sterling, Illinois passed away at 9:53 a.m. Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at Heritage Health Therapy and Senior Care in Mt. Sterling.

She was born January 3, 1929 in Schuyler County, Illinois the daughter of Alvin Lee and Viola Beatrice Peterson Clayton.  She was married to Ray E. Smith for 26 years and to this union three children, Linda, Michael and Roger were born.

Mrs. Smith served as a cook for South Grade School in Mt. Sterling for 13 years, retiring in 1989.  Kate also assisted the elderly in the community through community care and cleaned the Brown County Mental Health Office Building. 

She attended both the Buckhorn and Hersman Schools.  Kate enjoyed watching TV, sewing and reading, but her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. 

Survivors include 2 sons Michael E. Smith of Mt. Sterling, Illinois and Roger Gene Smith of Poolville, Texas.  4 grandchildren Chris Smith of Meredosia, Illinois, Anitra Smith of Paducah, Kentucky, Mary Smith Rawlings of Jacksonville, Illinois and Jeremy Smith of Camp Point, Illinois.  11 great grandchildren.  1 sister Lula Belle Baker of Metamora, Illinois also survives along with several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 1 daughter Linda Smith, 3 brothers Lloyd Gene Clayton, Floyd Dean Clayton and Thomas Lee Clayton and 2 sisters Darlene Bowen and Betty Lewis. 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 10, 2019 in the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling with Rev. Matt Haberman officiating.

Burial will be in the Camden West-Peterson Cemetery in Camden, Illinois.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Monday at the funeral home.
