Robert Paul “Bob” Volk, age 89, of Mt. Sterling, Illinois passed away at 9:46 a.m. Sunday, July 14, 2019 at his residence.
He was born August 3, 1929 in Brown County, Illinois the son of John Mathias and Mary Keltz Volk, Jr. He married Rozella M. “Pinky” Bullard on August 20, 1955 and she preceded him in death on June 7, 2012.
Bob owned and operated Bob Volk Bulldozing for over 60 years and was also engaged in farming.
He attended Ferndale School in Brown County and graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in Mt. Sterling.
Mr. Volk was a veteran of the Korean War having served his country in the United States Army.
Bob was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mt. Sterling where he was also a member of the Nocturnal Adoration Society. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council # 1281, the Versailles Lions Club and was a member of both the Timewell and Mt. Sterling American Legion.
Bob was an active supporter of his community and had a special talent for roasting a hog, which was beneficial, as he was always volunteering to help with area fundraisers. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, but his greatest joy was the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include 4 children Cindy Jean Terry of Sandwich, Illinois, Bryce Allen Volk, Brandon Paul Volk and Colette Jane Volk all of Mt. Sterling. 1 brother Larry Volk of Mt. Sterling. 3 sisters Sister May Samuella O.P. and Agnes Patterson both of Springfield, Illinois and Teresa Frazier of Pittsfield, Illinois. 4 grandchildren Patrick Cady (Julie), John Cady (Sarah), Eli Volk (Heather) and Denver Alderson. 5 great grandchildren Blakely Volk and Carter, Abagail, Isabelle and Elli Cady also survive along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 son Bruce Volk, 1 great grandson, 3 brothers Louis “Dick” Volk, Frank Volk and James Volk and 2 sisters Shirley Langan and Kathryn Shelts.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 18, 2019 in the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mt. Sterling with Deacon Mike Ellerman officiating.
Burial will be in the Mt. Sterling Catholic Cemetery. A military service will be conducted at the graveside by the Illinois National Guard Funeral Honors Detail and the Mt. Sterling American Legion Post #374.
Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday evening in the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling. A prayer service will be held at the conclusion of the visitation.
Memorials are suggested to the Mt. Sterling Catholic Cemetery or St. Mary’s School.
