Bertha LaVerne “Bernie” DeJaynes, age 93, of Mt. Sterling, Illinois passed away at 11:10 a.m. Saturday, April 27, 2019 at Good Samaritan Home in Quincy, Illinois.
She was born November 4, 1925 in Buckhorn Township in Brown County, Illinois the daughter of Harvey and Sara Melvina Kirgan Phillips. She married James A. DeJaynes on March 10, 1950 in Mt. Sterling, Illinois and he preceded her in death on June 18, 1996.
Mrs. DeJaynes was a homemaker and had also worked as a nurse’s aide for several area nursing homes.
She attended Buckhorn school and was a member of the Mt. Sterling Church of the Nazarene.
Mrs. DeJaynes always enjoyed reading her Bible, quilting and working jigsaw puzzles, but her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include 10 children Carolyn Tate (Bob) of Quincy, Illinois, William Vance (Jan) of Taylor, Missouri, Richard DeJaynes (Teri) of Barry, Illinois, Dale DeJaynes of Jacksonville, Illinois, Connie DeJaynes of Quincy, Illinois, Lloyd DeJaynes (Tina) of Pittsfield, Illinois, Vickie DeJaynes (Terry) of Quincy, Illinois, Gary DeJaynes (Kala) of Pittsfield, Illinois, Tim DeJaynes (Marsha) of Saverton, Missouri and Linda Bell of Versailles, Illinois. 20 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren also survive along with several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sons Alvin and Michael DeJaynes, 5 sisters Helen, Nettie May and Opal Marie Phillips, Dollie Shoemaker and Velma Martin and 2 brothers Robert and Arthur “Wilbert” Phillips.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 3, 2019 in the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling with Chaplain James Riley officiating.
Burial will be in the Mt. Sterling City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday evening at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Mt. Sterling Church of the Nazarene.
