Betty Jane Elbus, age 86, a resident of Heritage Health, Therapy and Senior Care in Mt. Sterling, Illinois and formerly of Galveston, Texas passed away at 5:02 p.m. Friday, January 15, 2021 at the nursing home.
She was born February 7, 1934 in Chicago, Illinois the daughter of Charles Hastings Mauck and Grace Louise Ott Mauck. Betty graduated from Brown County High School in Mt. Sterling as the Valedictorian of her class. She married Frederick J. Elbus on August 18, 1951. Betty worked as a bookkeeper at Barker Brothers Equipment in Mt. Sterling for many years and then as a contract negotiator for the City of Houston Fire Department before retiring to Galveston, Texas. She continued to work part time as a security guard on cruise ships in Galveston.
Betty also volunteered as a Girl Scout Leader for many years and was a 50 year member of The Grace Whipple Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star of Illinois, and was also a proud 50 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Betty was an avid reader and loved listening to the music of Robert Goulet, Frank Sinatra and Santana. She truly loved visiting with friends, family and reminiscing about almost anything.
She is survived by 2 daughters, Joyce Harvey (Rich) of Estes Park, Colorado and Michele Behymer (Steve) of Hersman, Illinois. One brother William Charles Mauck of Lake Livingston, Texas and nine grandchildren Larissa Boyd, Aimee Bonanno, Jennifer Bullard, Steve Harvey, Jeff Harvey, Dan Behymer, Stacey Volk, Brock Behymer and Kirsten Laning. 25 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild also survives.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one son Gregory Eugene Elbus.
Cremation will be accorded and a private service will be held at later date at Galveston Bay.
Memorials are suggested to the Heritage Health, Therapy and Senior Care Activity Fund and may be left at or mailed to the Hendricker Funeral Home, 406 South Capitol Avenue, Mt. Sterling, IL 62353.
