Dean Hulvey

April 6, 1933 ~ November 10, 2021 (age 88)

Obituary

Dean Edward Hulvey, age 88, of Mt. Sterling, IL passed away at 12:45 a.m. Wednesday, November 10, 2021, surrounded by his family’s love.

Dean was born at home in Astoria, IL on April 6, 1933, the 8th of 10 children to Ross and Stella (White) Hulvey.  As a boy, Dean enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening with his dad, and spending time with his large, close-knit family.  Growing up he had many close friends, one of the closest being his beloved dog, Bowzer.

As he grew older, Dean developed a strong work ethic, working in hayfields for local farmers and doing other jobs.  He graduated from V.I.T. High School in Table Grove, IL where he excelled as a fullback in football.  After high school, he played semi-pro football for a short time in Canton, IL.

Dean married his high school sweetheart, Sarah Jeannette Atwater on May 2, 1952.  Together they raised six children.  He served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954.  Dean completed leadership school, finishing 1st of 350 men, and was awarded the American Spirit Honor Medal for this accomplishment.  After serving in the military, he worked at Caterpillar for five years in Peoria, IL.  Dean then enrolled at WIU in Macomb, IL, earning his education degree in just three years, all while he and his wife were raising four small children, ages five and under.

Dean began his teaching career at Brown County High School in 1961.  He was hired to set up and teach the first full-fledged Industrial Arts program.  When he walked into the shop, it still had a dirt floor and not one piece of equipment.  During his 37-year teaching career Dean also taught Driver’s Ed., was active as a coach in the football and golf programs, ran the clock at football games, and was a scorekeeper for the basketball team for over 50 years.  As a result, he was inducted into the IHSA Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1993.  Upon retirement in 1998, the Industrial Arts Department was renamed “The Dean Hulvey Industrial Arts Wing”.

Dean was a respected teacher and a friend to many.  He enjoyed golf, following sports, coffee with friends, and woodworking.  He loved his family and his family immensely loved him.

He is survived by his children Janelle (Greg) Carlock of Black Earth, WI, Mike (Anne) Hulvey of Shelburne, VT, Roger (Jean) Hulvey of Mt. Sterling, IL, Kathy (Rod) Logsdon of Mt. Sterling, IL, Dan (Pam) Hulvey of Mt. Morris, IL and Gary (Beth) Hulvey of Chatham, IL. Dean also considered Bonnie Kleinlein Sorrells of Mt. Sterling, IL as a daughter and part of his family.
