Eugene John “Gene” Zackey, age 92, of Mt. Sterling, Illinois passed away at 2:37 a.m. Monday, May 2, 2022 at Rushville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Rushville, Illinois.
He was born January 23, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois the son of John and Helen Dambek Zackey. He married Jean Gillette on December 5, 1970 in the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church in Schuyler County, Illinois and she survives..
Mr. Zackey was a proud member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for 65 years.
He graduated from Finger High School in Chicago, Illinois and then served his country in the United States Air Force.
Gene was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mt. Sterling and also a member of the Mt. Sterling American Legion Post #374. Mr. Zackey was a Ham Radio Operator, he also had his pilot’s license and enjoyed flying.
Survivors include his wife Jean Zackey of Mt. Sterling. 1 brother Thomas Zackey of Dalton, Illinois. 1 brother-in-law Richard Gillette (Gayleen) of Winfield, Missouri. 1 sister-in-law Sandi Gillette of Indiana, Pennsylvania. 8 nieces and nephews Casey Giaimo, Debbie Valois, Scott, Robert, Mark, Joseph and Dan Gillette and Stephanie Madlinger also survive along with numerous great nieces and great nephews, whom he dearly loved.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 sister Geraldine Giaimo and 2 brothers-in-law Peter Giaimo and Jerry Gillette.
A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m Monday, May 9, 2022 in the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mt. Sterling.
Burial will follow in the Hersman Cemetery in Hersman, Illinois. A military service will be conducted at the graveside by the Mt. Sterling American Legion Post #374.
There will be no visitation.
