James Joseph Wort, age 90, a resident of the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy, Illinois and formerly of Mt. Sterling, Illinois passed away at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 5, 2023 at the Veterans Home.
He was born May 31, 1933 in Monmouth, Illinois the son of Joseph G. and Cecilia H. Ashbaker Wort. He married Marilyn Ann Nolan on July 28, 1953 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mt. Sterling and she survives.
Mr. Wort owned and operated Wort TV in Mt. Sterling for 35 years and he then worked as a lieutenant for the Illinois Department of Corrections at the Western Illinois Correctional Center in Mt. Sterling for several years.
He graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in Mt. Sterling with the class of 1951.
Jim was a veteran of the Korean War having served his country in the United States Army.
He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Mt. Sterling and was also a member of the Mt. Sterling American Legion Post #374. Jim was a 35 year member of the Mt. Sterling Volunteer Fire Department and also volunteered for Cass-Schuyler Area Hospice for several years.
Survivors along with his wife are three sons, Jerry Wort (Marcia) of Quincy, Illinois, Edward Wort (Laura) of St. Charles, Missouri and Jeff Wort of Beardstown, Illinois. A son-in-law, Von Clark of Timewell, Illinois. Five grandchildren Eric Wort (Monica), Kara Mshaiel (Hakeem), Kyle Wort (Brittany), Robert Wort (Victoria) and Nolan Clark. Three great grandchildren Adeline, Blakely & Mia Wort also survive along with one sister Elizabeth Balzer of Camp Point, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons Gregory Wort and Chris Wort and one daughter Beth Clark.
A funeral mass will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2023 in the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mt. Sterling with Father Aaron Kuhn officiating.
Burial will follow in the Mt. Sterling Catholic Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted at the graveside by the Illinois National Guard Funeral Honors Detail.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling.
Memorials are suggested to St. Mary’s School.
