Lura Louise Hendricks, age 85, of Mt. Sterling, Illinois passed away at 8:09 p.m. Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois.
She was born August 27, 1938 in Buckhorn Township of Brown County, Illinois the daughter of Lawrence and Alma Belle Rhoades Mayfield. She married Harlan Edward Hendricks on December 21, 1957 at the First Baptist Church in Mt. Sterling and soon after they were married they moved to Ripley where they began raising their family. Her husband preceded her in death on May 4, 1976.
During her life Louise had several jobs including working at Hornby’s Five and Dime, was a beautician apprentice for Elva Zorn, worked at Bertha Butler’s restaurant, Helen Holtschlag’s dry cleaners, Rolling Green Golf Club, served as a secretary for the construction company that built the Western Illinois Correctional Center and cleaned houses for several area families, but the job she took the most pride in was being a homemaker for her family.
Louise attended grade school in both Benville and Buckhorn where she either rode a horse or walked 3 miles a day to attend and graduated from Brown County High School with the class of 1956.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mt. Sterling and more recently attended the Timewell Baptist Church. Louise was also a lifetime member of the Mt. Sterling American Legion Post #374 Auxiliary.
Survivors include 3 children Edward Eugene Hendricks (Susanne), Eric Linn Hendricks (Suzette Rice) and Vicki Sue Shoopman (Brian) all of Mt. Sterling. 6 grandchildren Ian Edward Hendricks (Tiffanie), Kendra Elizabeth Stamerjohn (Drew), Jered Matthew Shoopman (Jackie), Jacob Wyatt Shoopman, Sara Louise Hendricks (Jonathan McAvoy) and Jeremiah Edward Hendricks. 5 great grandchildren Greyson, Emerson and Aspen Shoopman and Emma and Eli Stamerjohn. 1 brother Dewie Mayfield of Mt. Sterling also survives along with many loving nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 5 brothers, including 1 in infancy and Cordell, James, George, and Jack Mayfield and 4 sisters Helen Rose Mayfield, Audrey Evon Baker, Harriett Jane Friedhoff and Katherine Darl Witt.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 4, 2023 in the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling with Pastor Dale Gadberry and Pastor Dan Edwards officiating. Those unable to attend are invited to watch the service live on her obituary page of the funeral home website, hendrickerfuneralhome.com.
Burial will follow in the Ripley Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Ripley Cemetery.
