Matthew Umphryes

Matthew Thomas Umphryes, age 56, of Decatur, Illinois and formerly of Mt. Sterling, Illinois passed away at 12:30 p.m. Friday, February 10, 2023 at his residence. 

He was born June 15, 1966 in Rushville, Illinois the son of Edgar Burton and Zelma Kaye Moore Umphryes.  

Matt attended the Nazarene Church in Rushville, Illinois.  He was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan and always enjoyed watching westerns, listening to gospel music and old cars.   

Survivors include his mother, Zelma Kaye Jones of Mt. Sterling, Illinois.  1 brother Vern Umphryes of Rushville, Illinois.  1 sister Carolyn DeJaynes of Summer Hill, Illinois.  1 aunt Lena Lambert of Beardstown, Illinois also survives along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. 

He was preceded in death by his father, 1 brother Harlan Umphreys and 1 sister Lynn Umphryes. 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 in the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling with Rev. Fred Fritz officiating.  Those unable to attend are invited to watch Matt’s service live on his obituary page of the funeral home website, hendrickerfuneralhome.com. 

Burial will follow in the Ripley Cemetery.  

Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the funeral home. 

Memorials are suggested to the family to assist with the expenses.
