Mr. Niles Henry Brierton, age 73, of rural Mt. Sterling, Illinois passed away at 5:33 p.m. Thursday, February 18, 2021 at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.
He was born August 13, 1947 in Quincy, Illinois the son of Henry Hoelscher and May Dehart Brierton. He married Marilyn J. Gibson on January 23, 1971 in Chatham, Illinois and she survives.
Niles was a self employed carpenter and was also engaged in farming.
He attended Hersman Grade School and graduated from Brown County High School with the class of 1965.
Mr. Brierton served his country in the Illinois National Guard for several years.
Niles was a member of the Mt. Sterling First United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Brown County Hornet Boosters and also served as treasurer of the Zion Lutheran Cemetery for several years.
Niles was a true nature lover and always enjoyed fishing, bird watching and spending time outdoors.
Survivors include his wife Marilyn Brierton of Mt. Sterling. 2 children Troy Brierton (Chris) of Versailles and Sheena Mathena (Mike) of Mt. Sterling. 1 brother Max Brierton (Ann) of Mt. Sterling. 4 grandchildren Sydney and Levi Brierton and Toni and Cori June Mathena also survive along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 23, 2021 in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Brown County with Pastor Charla Meyers officiating.
Military honors will be conducted at the graveside.
There will be no visitation.
Memorials are suggested to St. Judes Children’s Hospital and may be left at or mailed to the Hendricker Funeral Home, 406 South Capitol Avenue, Mt. Sterling, Illinois 62353.
