Anthony J. “Tony” Mathewson, age 76 of Timewell, Illinois passed away at 11:15 p.m. on Thursday, April 22, 2021 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois.
He was born April 26, 1944 in Chicago, Illinois the son of Leland J. and Shirley Ann Hendricks Mathewson.
He married Debra Shepherd in 1972 and he later married Linda Grist on March 25, 1995 at the Ripley Church of God in Ripley, Illinois, and she survives.
Tony retired as a food service supervisor with the Illinois Department of Corrections having worked at both the Clayton Work Camp and the Western Illinois Correctional Center. Earlier in life he also worked for Buckley Auto Parts and Long Oliver both in Mt.Sterling.
Mr. Mathewson was of the Catholic faith and attended Ripley School and graduated from Brown County High School in Mt.Sterling.
Tony loved the outdoors whether he was working on tractors, hunting mushrooms, fishing or frying up the fish for his family and friends. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and a proud member of the National Rifle Association. Tony also enjoyed square dancing with the Twilight Twirlers but his greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Linda of Timewell, 3 children, David Mathewson (Jessica) of Fort Myers, Florida, Donna Mathewson of Peoria, Illinois and Chris Mathewson of Sioux City, Iowa. 2 brothers, Rick Mathewson of Rushville, Illinois and Scott Aldrich of Hannibal, Missouri. 1 sister Mary Lou Stephens of Owasso, Oklahoma. 8 grandchildren and 1 great grandson also survive along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 1 sister Patty.
Cremation will be accorded and a memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28, 2021 in the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt.Sterling with Pastor Richard Young officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will follow in the Mounds Cemetery near Timewell, Illinois.
Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services on Wednesday at the funeral home.
