William Albert “Bill” Monroe, age 77, of Versailles, Illinois passed away at 2:33 a.m. Monday, April 17, 2017 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, Illinois.
He was born June 11, 1939 in Morgan County, Illinois the son of James David and Anna Pauline Huddleston Monroe. He married Rose Ann Shipley on September 4, 1960 and she survives.
Mr. Monroe attended Ashland, Illinois schools. Bill was a lifelong farmer starting first in the Ashland area and then in 1964 he moved to Versailles and farmed his family farm with his father until 2004, he then farmed an additional two years until retiring in 2006. While farming, he worked as a truck driver for Alan Thorman and had also worked road construction.
Bill was of the Christian faith. He attended the Versailles Christian Church until 2016, and then started attending the First Baptist Church of Mt. Sterling.
Mr. Monroe served as a Volunteer Fireman for the Village of Versailles for 30 years, where he also served as assistant chief. Bill enjoyed attending gospel sings and going to camp meeting at the Lamoine Christian Church Camp. He also enjoyed visiting with his friends at the F. S. Fast Stop in Versailles and McDonald’s in Mt. Sterling. Earlier in life Bill served as an umpire and coach for the Brown County Little League and was also an avid Brown County Hornet fan. He truly enjoyed the time spent with his family and especially loved attending his grandchildren’s many activities.
Survivors include his wife Rose Ann Monroe of Versailles. 3 children Learta Monroe and Dan Monroe both of Versailles and Ben Monroe of Florence, Illinois. 5 grandchildren Anjelica Femmer, Taylor, Avery, Simon and David Monroe. 1 brother Richard Monroe (Jean) of Jacksonville, Illinois also survives along with several aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 19, 2017 in the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling with Rev. Aaron Foster officiating.
Burial will be in the Versailles West Side Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Lamoine Christian Service Camp or the Sting Squad.
